The background
Richiș sits a few kilometres from Biertan and receives almost none of Biertan’s visitors. It is a working village of farmhouses with red-tiled roofs, and its fortified church rewards anyone who has already seen the famous ones and wants to understand the type rather than the highlights.
The stonework
The church is unusually ornamented for a village of this size. The west portal is deeply recessed in successive orders, the vault ribs come down onto slender columns, and the keystones are carved with masks — a decorative programme you do not expect in a rural Saxon church, and the reason specialists come here.
How to use it
Pair it with Biertan rather than treating it as a destination in its own right, unless you are staying in the area — in which case Richiș is the kind of village where staying is the point.
The church keeps its own hours and is often locked; a key-holder lives nearby.
