Your Practical Guide to Romania

Discover where to go, what to experience, how to plan your route and when a private guided tour makes sense.

How long you have changes everything

Our recommendation, not a rule — how we would spend the time, and why.

3–5 days

Southern Transylvania, and nothing else

One base, two walled towns and the Saxon villages between them. Adding a second region to a short trip buys you driving, not sights.

7 days

Transylvania plus Bucharest

The extra days are best spent going deeper rather than further — the mountain roads, Brașov, and a capital that most itineraries skip and should not.

10–14 days

Add the north or the east

Maramureș and Bucovina are a long way from Transylvania and worth it; the Danube Delta is further still and rewards two days minimum. Pick one of the three, not all.

Where things are in Romania

Six regions, and the distances between them are the thing most itineraries get wrong.

Schematic map of Romania showing its main travel regions Maramureș lies in the north, Bucovina in the north-east, Transylvania in the centre with the Saxon villages on its eastern side, Bucharest and Wallachia in the south, and the Danube Delta on the Black Sea coast in the south-east. How we research this guide

What we will and will not tell you

The rules we hold ourselves to, including the ones that mean leaving things out.

Three sources, or it does not go in
Anything factual — a date, a UNESCO listing, an altitude — is checked against independent sources before it is published. Where they disagree, we say so on the page instead of picking one.
No opening hours, no ticket prices
They change, and a wrong time here costs somebody a day. Where a site has an official page, we link it — a link that stays right beats a figure that quietly goes wrong.
We are a guide, not a booking site
Nothing is sold here. Private and guided trips are arranged externally through Romania Tour Store, and several pages here recommend driving yourself instead.
About

Built for travelers who want Romania explained clearly

Romania can be difficult to understand from the outside — distances, regions, roads, castles and tour options often blur together. This guide helps you connect the dots before choosing your route.
