Where to actually find itTwo regions carry this most strongly and they are quite different. The Saxon villages of southern Transylvania are German-founded, built around a fortified church, and largely emptied of their original population — what survives is architecture and landscape. Maramureș in the north is a living tradition rather than a preserved one: carved gates, wooden churches, and crafts that are still worked.The practical advice is the same for both. Stay in a village guesthouse rather than a town hotel, drive rather than take tours, and leave time that is not allocated to anything. The good part is usually not on the itinerary.
