The background
Saschiz is one of the seven Villages with Fortified Churches in Transylvania inscribed by UNESCO. The church is a 15th-century Gothic hall church, and the piece that catches the eye is separate from it: a tall stone clock tower standing on its own, deliberately modelled on the one in Sighișoara down the road.
It is the last tower of the church’s own fortifications still standing.
Saschiz sits on the main road rather than up a track, which makes it the easiest of the fortified churches to fit into a drive — and it is a working village rather than a restored one, which for many visitors is the better experience.
There is also a ruined hilltop citadel above the village, a separate and older refuge, reached on foot.
