About Sighișoara

The background

Sighișoara is two towns. There is the citadel on the hill — walled, cobbled, inhabited, on the UNESCO list since 1999 — and there is the ordinary town below it, where most people live and where the station is.

You have come for the first one, and the practical advice follows from that: stay inside the walls if you can.

Why the evening matters

The citadel is compact enough to see in an hour, and it is on every coach itinerary in the country. Between about ten and five it is busy in a way that a place this size cannot absorb.

After the day visitors leave it becomes a quiet residential hill with lit towers on it, and that version is worth arranging your day around. Arrive late, walk it in the evening, walk it again before nine.

As a base

It sits in the middle of the Saxon village country — Biertan, Viscri, Saschiz and Mălâncrav are all reachable from here — and on the main road and rail line between Brașov and Cluj. That makes it a natural overnight stop rather than a detour, which is exactly how most trips should use it.
