An independent guide to Romania, written for people planning the trip themselves. We do not sell tours, and nothing here depends on you booking anything.
What this site is
A practical travel guide to Romania, organised the way a trip is actually planned: by where you might go, by what you want to be doing, by the routes that connect them, and by the questions that come up before you book.
It is written for independent travellers. Every route here assumes you are arranging the trip yourself, and every page is intended to be useful whether or not you ever contact anyone.
How the content is written
Factual claims about places on this site are checked against at least three independent sources before they are published, and the sources are recorded against each page. Where sources disagree — which happens more than you would expect, particularly about opening seasons and museum statistics — we say what is agreed and leave out what is not.
That is why some pages tell you to check something for the current year rather than giving you a date. Seasonal road closures and opening times move, and a guide that states them confidently is a guide that will be wrong within a year.
Tours and how we are funded
We do not run tours and we do not take bookings. Guided and private trips are operated by Romania Tour Store, which is a separate business; where a page links to them, it is clearly marked and it opens on their site.
Nothing in the editorial content is written to push you toward a tour. Several pages actively recommend driving yourself, because for most trips that is the better answer.
