ASTRA Museum of Traditional Folk Civilisation

ASTRA is not a museum with an outdoor section. It is a forest — Dumbrava, a few kilometres out of Sibiu — with a village-worth of real buildings brought into it and reassembled: houses, barns, workshops, churches, inns, and an extraordinary number of mills.

The museum gives its own figures as 96 hectares, over 400 buildings, and about ten kilometres of paths between them. Those numbers are the practical information: this is a walk, not a visit, and treating it as an hour’s stop is the usual mistake.

The mills are the thing people underestimate

The collection of mills is the part specialists come for. The museum’s own account is that its grain mills between them cover every known way of powering a mill across the Euro-Asian area, with a single exception — tide mills, which need a sea.

You do not need to care about milling for this to land. Walking from a horse mill to a watermill to a windmill in twenty minutes is a compressed lesson in what “before engines” actually meant.

Getting the most out of it

Go when the weather is decent, allow half a day, and accept that you will not see all of it. In winter it is a different and quieter place, and the paths can be hard going.
