A narrow-gauge steam railway up a forest valley from Vișeu de Sus — and still a working logging line, not a preserved one.

The background
What the walking is likeRomania has serious mountains rather than scenic hills. The Făgăraș range holds the country's highest peaks; Piatra Craiului is a long limestone ridge; the Apuseni are karst, with caves and gorges rather than summits. Two things surprise people. The first is that trail marking is good — a Romanian system of painted symbols that is consistent and easy to follow once explained. The second is that large carnivores are genuinely present. Bears are not a marketing line here, and any walk needs the same respect it would in the Alps. The mountain roads are the low-effort version, and the Transfăgărășan is the one everyone means. It is seasonal — check the current year before planning around it.
