The Delta Channels
The delta itself, seen the only way it can be — from a boat, in the narrow channels rather than on the main arms. Over three hundred bird species pass through.

The background
The Danube splits into three arms — Chilia, Sulina and Sfântu Gheorghe — and everything worth seeing is in the water between them: channels, lakes and the largest reed beds in Europe. It was inscribed by UNESCO in 1991 and is a biosphere reserve under a separate programme.
The mistake to avoid
The Sulina arm is a shipping canal: straight, dredged and fast. A boat trip that runs you down it and back has technically taken you into the delta and has shown you almost nothing.
What you want is the small channels — narrow enough that the reeds close over the boat, slow enough to hear it. That means a smaller boat and a local operator, and it usually means starting early.
Birds
Over three hundred bird species have been recorded, and in spring the delta is one of the significant migration and breeding sites in Europe. Counts differ between sources, which is what you would expect of a place where the census is a boat and a pair of binoculars.
Two days is the minimum that makes the journey worth it. It is a long way from anywhere else in Romania and it does not reward a rushed visit.
