What the season changesLate spring and early autumn are the reliable answers: the villages are green or turning, the towns are not crowded, and the weather is workable. High summer is hot on the plains and busy in the mountains. Winter closes the high roads and turns the region into something quieter and harder to move around.The single biggest seasonal constraint is the Transfăgărășan, whose high section is closed through the winter and opens in early summer — the dates move with the snow each year and are published by the roads authority, so check the current year rather than planning on a remembered date.
