Viscri Fortified Church

A whitewashed church inside a low fortified wall, in a village that is worth the unsurfaced road it takes to reach it.

About Viscri Fortified Church

The background

Viscri is smaller, plainer and further off the main road than Biertan, and for a lot of visitors it is the better of the two. The church is whitewashed and modest inside a compact ring of wall and towers, and it is one of the seven Villages with Fortified Churches in Transylvania on the UNESCO list.

What makes Viscri is not the church on its own but the fact that the village around it is still a village — single street, houses in faded colours, unhurried. It has become well known, and it is still not busy in the way the towns are.

The approach is partly unsurfaced. An ordinary car manages it; it takes longer than the distance suggests.
