Breb is the village most often recommended to people who want to sleep in Maramureș rather than drive through it, and the recommendation is sound. It has guesthouses, it has working farms, and it has the carved wooden gates the region is known for — standing in front of houses people live in.
Why stay rather than stop
Maramureș rewards being unhurried more than any other region in this guide. The interest is not a monument you tick off; it is haymaking, gates, a churchyard on a Sunday, the fact that horses are still working animals here.
None of that is visible from a car at two in the afternoon. It is visible from a guesthouse over a couple of days, which is the argument for choosing a village as a base at all.

Breb sits under the Gutâi mountains, within reach of Sighetu Marmației, the wooden churches and Săpânța. It has a wooden church of its own, which is worth seeing and is not one of the eight on the UNESCO list — a distinction several guides get wrong.
