The background
Alba Carolina is a Vauban-style star fortress — the geometry of bastions and ravelins designed so that every face of the wall is covered by fire from another. Construction began on 4 November 1715 and finished in 1738, under Habsburg rule.
Three fortifications, one hill
It was built on ground already fortified twice. Underneath is Apulum, the base of the Roman Legio XIII Gemina, and after that the medieval citadel of Bălgrad. Walking the walls you are walking over both.
That layering is unusually legible here. Most European sites of this kind buried their predecessors; at Alba Iulia the earlier phases are still findable inside the later one.
What it is like now
The citadel is not a ruin and not a museum — it is a large walled quarter of a working town, with streets, buildings and people inside it. Allow the time to walk the circuit rather than visiting a single gate; the gates are the celebrated pieces but the shape of the thing is the point.
