The background
If you came to Romania expecting a Gothic castle on a rock with towers and a bridge, this is the one. Corvin is at Hunedoara, in western Transylvania, and it is a genuine 15th-century fortress-palace rather than a 19th-century idea of one.
The family
It was rebuilt into what you see by John Hunyadi — Iancu de Hunedoara — who was Voivode of Transylvania and the leading commander against Ottoman expansion in his generation. His son Matthias Corvinus became King of Hungary and extended it further, adding the Renaissance work.
That lineage is the reason the building is both a fortress and a palace. It had to defend a frontier and house a court that mattered in European politics.
Practical
It is out on its own — Hunedoara is not near the main Transylvanian circuit, and Corvin is usually a deliberate detour rather than something you pass. Treat it as the object of a day.
It has been heavily restored across the 19th and 20th centuries, which is visible in places and does not much diminish it.
