What you are actually looking atThree different things get called castles here and they are worth separating. There are genuine medieval fortifications, built to hold a frontier — Bran, Râșnov, Corvin. There are nineteenth-century royal residences built to look medieval, of which Peleș is the outstanding example and one of the finest of its kind in Europe. And there are the fortified churches of the Saxon villages, which are neither, and are the ones most visitors end up remembering.The Dracula connection is a literary one. Bram Stoker never visited Romania, and the historical prince the name was borrowed from has a real and much more interesting story attached to Sighișoara and Wallachia.
